Policies & Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your pet's appointment. Clear, simple guidelines to ensure a safe, calm grooming experience.

Our Policies

Rabies Vaccination

We need a current rabies certificate on file before your pet's first visit. A tag alone is not enough.

Texas state law requires all dogs and cats to have a current, unexpired rabies vaccination, and we need to verify the expiration date. That means a photo of the tag won't work β€” we need the certificate. Send a photo or PDF to north@asthefurfliesaustin.com for North Austin, or info@asthefurfliesaustin.com for South Austin, or bring a physical copy with you. Puppies still working through their vaccination series are the one exception; just let us know where they are in the series when you book.

Cancellations & No-Shows

More than 48 hours' notice, no charge. Within 48 hours, 50%. Within 24 hours or a no-show, 100%.

We understand that life happens. But a late cancellation affects our team, and it takes a spot that could have gone to a pet on our waitlist. Please give us as much notice as you can β€” and if something comes up, talk to us. We would always rather hear from you.

Late Arrivals

More than 15 minutes late and we may not be able to complete the full service. More than 30 minutes late counts as a no-show.

We'll always do our best to accommodate you if you're running behind. But past 10 to 15 minutes we can't guarantee there's enough time left to finish the scheduled service, and arrivals more than 30 minutes late may be treated as a no-show and charged in full. If you're running late, please text us so we can plan around it.

Card on File

We keep a card on file to hold your appointment. It is not charged when you book.

Rather than ask for a non-refundable deposit, we keep a card on file to secure your time slot. Nothing is charged at the time of booking. If you'd like to use it to pay at pick-up, just let us know.

Matting

Severe matting is safest removed by shaving. It may cost more, and it can reveal skin conditions hidden under the coat.

Matting is densely tangled clumps of fur that form when a coat isn't brushed often enough, as loose hair becomes embedded in the living coat. Light matting can sometimes be combed out, but once it's tight against the skin, the safest and least painful option is to shave the pelted coat away. Removing matting can reveal or cause underlying skin conditions that were impossible to see beneath the coat. We will always work to remove matting as safely and comfortably as we can, and we'll talk to you before doing anything significant. Heavy matting may add to the cost of the groom. As The Fur Flies is not responsible for adverse effects caused by mat removal, and in some cases we may refer a severely matted pet to a veterinarian instead.

Ear Plucking & Anal Gland Expression

Both are available on request, for healthy dogs, case by case. We won't pluck ears that look irritated or infected.

We perform ear plucking and external anal gland expression only when asked, and only on healthy dogs. Because both can cross into internal medicine, which is outside our scope, we may decline either service if we think it isn't in your pet's best interest. We don't recommend over-plucking ears, and we will not pluck an ear that appears irritated or infected. Anal gland expression can help dogs that struggle to express naturally, but doing it too often can reduce a dog's ability to do it on their own. We always recommend talking to your veterinarian about what your pet actually needs.

Pick-Up

We'll text you when your pet is ready. Please pick up within 30 minutes.

We'll send you an update when your pet has about 30 minutes left, and then text you as soon as they're finished. We ask that pets be collected within 30 minutes of being ready. It keeps the salon calm for the pets still with us, and it means nobody is waiting in a kennel longer than they need to. We reserve the right to charge a daycare fee for pets left significantly beyond that.

Puppies

Start after the second round of vaccines. Aim for 3 to 4 short intro grooms before five months old.

The earlier you start, the easier grooming is for the rest of your puppy's life. We suggest booking once they've had their second round of vaccines, and getting in as many puppy introduction grooms as possible before they turn five months. Ideally that's three or four short visits before moving to a full groom. We will not force a puppy older than five months through a full groom if they've never been professionally groomed or they aren't comfortable β€” we'll build up to it instead.
